I have always said that having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a pee section in a pool. The dangers of second hand smoking, over hyped or not, are real. In light of this fact Gov. Granholm has passed a smoke-free law making it illegal to smoke indoors in most of Michigan. Among the few exceptions are the Casinos and Cigar Clubs in Detroit.
Question: is this a violation of our freedom?
I think not. Although the ability to smoke will be taken away from many of our citizens, the health of just as many will be protected. Besides, is it not illegal to smoke marijuana? I would like somebody to tell me why that is illegal, yet smoking in general is not.
Narcotics are addictive, expensive and destructive.
Cigarettes are addictive, expensive and destructive.
Get them both out or neither one. Be consistent in your laws, draw a straight line.
I was worried at first that this law may come too close to violating our freedoms. But when I heard that it only prohibits indoor smoking I saw how health oriented it was, and how it could not be abused.
My brother brought up the point that a man out in the middle of a field smoking would not affect anybody. He should therefore not have his right taken away from him. The outdoors-only detail edifies that.
What do you think? Good or bad law? Is this big Government?
Thanks for reading.

P.S. It takes effect May 1st.

well, i had the recent experience of being crammed in a small area with everyone but me lighting up a cigarette, so i'm going to agree with you on this one. doing this indoors is forcing your preference on other people. not cool.
I think it'a good idea, but that it should be implemeneted by personal business owners ~ I think the government is overstepping by making it a law that all have to obey. And does this apply to presonal homes? Where does the line draw, and who's drawn it? (I confess I haven't read the bill, so am not as informed as I could be.) Individuals also have the right to go where they want – if they don't want the smoke, then leave. But you do have the inconsiderate beings that make this kind of law come to the table in the first place, so I also see what faithr is talking about.
This is true. I am a lot more torn over this law than the blog post may suggest.
On one hand I want to see the health of our citizens protected, and on the other I want their freedom protected.
I chose to support this law because I want so badly to see cigarettes become a narcotic.
Also, I would like to point out that it has been the freedom of the business owners to ban smoking. However, very few have chosen to protect their guests or employees. And in some establishment, leaving is hardly an option. Especially if you work there.
Smoking outside or in your own home or vehicle is still legal.
Why bother protecting peoples health everyones going to die anyway?
Good point. We should also legalize murder for that same reason.

Okay, I apologize for being rude with my previous comment.
But if you go through life with that kind of perspective, you'll make unwise decisions. Although it is appointed to man once to die, that does not mean we won't live with consequences.
Thanks Cullen, I'm puzzled however, You wrote in support of Dan the creator “Debunking Atheists”
claims that we need not worry about human pollution and there consequences because were all going to die anyway. He also claims that these consequences no matter how bad they are just part of gods plan. Isn't the consequences (peoples health) of pollution caused by the gluttonous, addiction to the easiness on modern conveniences the same, however more destructive, than smoking. Could you please explain this contratiction?
That I don't believe. I should have specified that, but I thought the discussion was speaking for itself there.
Although I don't think it is mans right the intermingle with nature, I do think we should be more responsible for what we do already. If we can come up with a cleaner, more efficient method of energy for example, then GREAT! But to tax factories and business' because they don't have one yet is stupid.
God has a plan for the world and every human being. But he has left us “elbow room” to make mistakes and walk away from him.
Thanks Cullen, what a relief I thought all creationists had Dan destructive mindset. Perhapts you could explain to Dan where he's going wrong. As the only this Dan listens to is religous reterric.
I agree on the tax thing. My analogy is “if I was paid $1000 to crap on your bed and as punishment for that crap I had to pay $50 out of my $1000, that would still leave the crap on your bed”
…I laughed on the inside at that.
I will clarify my stance to Dan.
